Ingredients

  • 1 cup chana dal (split Bengal gram)
  • 8 to 10 green chillies
  • 5 to 6 garlic cloves
  • ½ tablespoon salt
  • ½ tablespoon lemon juice
  • ½ tablespoon sugar
  • ¼ cup grated coconut
  • ¼ cup chopped coriander leaves
  • ¼ cup oil
  • ¼ cup milk
  • Mustard seeds
  • Asafoetida (hing)
  • Turmeric powder

Methods

  • Wash the chana dal and soak it for 4 hours.
  • Drain the water completely.
  • Grind the dal along with green chillies and salt to a coarse paste in a mixer.
  • Add lemon juice, sugar, milk, grated coconut, and coriander leaves to the mixture.
  • Prepare a tempering with oil, mustard seeds, and asafoetida.
  • Grease a vessel with oil and pour the mixture into it.
  • Place the vessel inside a cooker. Allow it to steam until two whistles.
  • When cool, cut into pieces before serving.
